Carmen Marie Powers

Carmen Marie “SuSu” Finlay Powers Carmen was born 2/8/40 in Birmingham AL to Dr. Andrew G Finlay, Sr. and Eugenia Carter Finlay. SuSu as she was known to her friends was a nickname given to her by her brother Dr. Andy Finlay of Albertville, AL. She attended school in Guntersville and graduated from MCHS in 1957. She was a cheerleader and very active in sports that were available for women. Coaches Lee and Chorba both said that they wished she was a boy because of her athletic ability. During the summers she attended Camp Nakanawa Camp for Girls in Mayland, TN. She loved this camp and influenced her daughters and granddaughter to attend as well. After high school she attended Montevallo College, Auburn University, Colorado State for summer school and then to the University of Alabama where she pledged Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. At the University of Alabama she met her husband of 52 years, Jack Powers, from Birmingham, AL and a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. Upon her marriage on 9/16/60 they lived in Birmingham where Jack was working with his father at Mark Powers & Co. Later in 1962 they moved to Guntersville, AL and in 1980 they moved the company to Guntersville and SuSu was very active in the business. SuSu was an avid tennis, golf and bridge player and won the Ladies Championship Golf at Cherokee Ridge CC several times. She was also very active in her church (First United Methodist) as a child and an adult and a long time member of the Ed Scruggs Sunday School class. She was very active in the American Red Cross Disaster Team and enjoyed helping people. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the First United Methodist Church of Guntersville, AL, the American Red Cross, or Hospice of Marshall County. She is survived by her husband Jack Powers, daughters Jenny Powers (Neal Light) and Pamela Powers Allen of Guntersville, 2 grandchildren Chelsee Allen and Andrew Allen and several nieces and nephews and her brother Dr. Andrew G Finlay, Jr. She is preceded in her death by her parents Dr. A.G. Finlay, Sr and Eugenia Carter Finlay. Pallbearers: Sid McDonald, George Beylouni, Joe King, George Barnett, Bill Ramsey, Eddie Echols, Sam Acquisto, Roy Woods Honorary: The Ed Scruggs Sunday School Class. Visitation will be Thursday evening, March 14, 2013 from 5 until 8 p.m. at Guntersville Memorial Chapel. Funeral Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, March 15, 2013 at the First United Methodist Church of Guntersville, Terry Bentley and Bill Milligan officiating.
