JOSEPH EARLE DARNELL He wanted to be remembered as a planter of trees. Joseph E. Darnell, age 80, died on Wednesday afternoon, April 25, 2018. Born and raised in Guntersville, he graduated MCHS in 1955 and completed his Pharmacy degree at Samford University in 1962. He worked at several local drug stores until he and his brother, Lloyd, built and opened Darnell Pharmacy in Albertville in 1976. They practiced there until they retired in 1996. Having never married, “Jo Jo” spent his latter years caring for his family’s farm. His life was changed when the April 27th tornadoes destroyed most of the trees there. He was an excellent sketch artist and wood carver. He was an eccentric Southern bachelor who enjoyed hard work, Mark Twain, congregational “fa-sol-la” singing, genealogy and remembering the past. He was a member of the AL National Guard for 10 years, the AL Pharmaceutical Association and the Baptist church. Joseph (Uncle) is survived by his sister-in-law, Mary “Tootsie” Darnell; his nephew, Dr. Thomas (Joan) Darnell; his great-nephew, Noah (Lynn) Darnell; his great-niece, Hailey (Samuel) Hunter; a special niece and neighbor, Dianne Barnett and by niece-in-law, Joanne Patterson Darnell He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Calhoun and Essie Lumpkin Darnell; his brother, Oscar Lloyd Darnell and his nephew, Joseph Melvin Darnell. The family will gather at a later date to spread his ashes at sites he chose
